Day 14: free weekend day 7mod5 (day 2)

 Sziastok!

Sunday morning was another eventful day for us number theory students. With the free weekend coming to an end, everyone was busy seeing the sites and exploring Vienna and Budapest!

Budapest

Budapest Parliament

View from the island

Back in Budapest, I spent the sunny day on Margaret Island. Walking the path around the whole island was a great way to see the views of the Buda and Pest sides. Also on the island, there was a “mini zoo” with a reindeer and there was a bird sanctuary. There was a large hotel and baths too that I did not explore. From there, I got crepes for a late lunch and enjoyed the view of the Parliament on such a beautiful day. Overall I had a great weekend but was excited when the roomies returned.

Vienna

St. Stephen's Cathedral

The view from the south tower
of St. Stephen's Cathedral

This morning we woke up and checked out of our hostel in an orderly and timely manner (just barely in time). Some of us (Noah and Gavin) went for a hike and ate berries for breakfast along the way (I think?). The rest of us went to a local cafe for a late breakfast and then set out to do a little site seeing. We walked past a castle, the Vienna City Hall, walked through a church and then, at 1pm, we went and toured St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Fun fact, there are two functional organs in the Cathedral with a combined 12,600 pipes (I have no frame of reference, but that seems like a lot, right???). Then we did a little more shopping, including the purchasing of “Mozart chocolates,” had lunch, and departed for the train ride home. While the train ride back was mostly a fight to stay awake (at least for me), we did get some advice from some locals in our compartment on some places to visit and eat at!

Alex and I had KFC for dinner, lowkey not bad.

We woke up and made our way to a cafe before going to the Austrian National Library. We learned about the medical history of Vienna. After a little shopping downtown, we went to the Upper Belvedere castle and viewed a lot of really beautiful classical and neoclassical art. We saw Gustav Klimt’s famous painting “The Kiss” there. After, we headed home on a train back to Budapest. A fun adventure for the weekend!

Vienna (part 3)

One of the museums

Changmin, Helen, Noah, Gavin, and Erika
outside of St Stephen's Cathedral

The Bratislava group ventured off on their own to explore the city. They started their day at breakfast before heading to Hopburg’s palace. The group then recreated a statue as onlookers looked on in glee. From there, the group went to St. Stephen's Cathedral, where Noah looked in yet another gift shop. We left (without a souvenir) and headed towards the city hall. Parliament was right next door, and the group stopped to look at the building and more importantly look for lunch. The group could not decide on a restaurant, so Noah and Changmin took a detour to get a bratwurst, ditching Gavin, Erika, and Helen in the middle of the crosswalk. The wind was too strong on their trek around the city, so the group sought shelter in the Natural History Museum. After exploring the museum for two hours, the group finally found a place to eat before their train ride home with the rest of the group.

As the free weekend came to an end, everyone made it safely back to Budapest, thrilled to be back for a double math day on Monday...
