Day 12: were not in minnesnota anymore toto

 Bon Napot!

Friday morning found all 24 number theory students toiling away to try to finish their midterm exam before the train out of Budapest. Once the midterm was over, the students were sent off for the free weekend, either to go to Bratislava, Vienna, or to explore Budapest more.

Bratislava

Exploring Bratislava

Yesterday we took the 1:30 train to Bratislava arriving at 4:00. We walked around a bit before stopping at the Savage Garden Bistro for a late lunch! Afterwards, we took a detour to see The Blue Church of Elizabeth. While touring, we took a moment to sit in the pews, where we were startled once a small chime rang, signaling to everyone but us to stand and join each other in song. We awkwardly stayed for about 30 minutes of the Slovakian service before finding a respectable time to leave! Eventually we walked to our hostel, dropped our bags off and ventured through Old Town! It was a foggy night, but very beautiful nonetheless! While walking through Old Town, we found ourselves not to far the Hrad Castle, however the fog made it difficult to see much! Once we left the castle grounds we decided to get dinner at a small bistro before going to a “squeakeasy” called “The Half Blind Pig” where we finished our night!!

Hero's Square

Vajdahunyad Castle

After lunch at The Goat Herder Cafe, I headed over to Hero’s Square, a beautiful monument honoring those who fought for Hungarian independence many years ago. Surrounded by many museums, the area was beautiful. Wandering further, I headed to Vajdahunyad Castle. It looked straight out of a fairytale. Not really interested in learning about agriculture at the museum, I appreciated the architecture and then left the castle. After walking around the beautiful walking trails, I headed to the Opera House. The lobby was gorgeous and from there I could hear the singers practicing; the acoustics and their abilities were so impressive. From there, I did some souvenir shopping and took a stroll down Fashion Street before heading back to the hotel for dinner and a relaxing night in.

Vienna

The view from the hostel

dinner at the market

After a 2-hour train ride to Vienna, we checked in to the hostel and then started to explore the city. From a wienerschnitzel restaurant highly recommended by Prof. Berliner to an Asian restaurant along the market, the food was excellent all around. After we got lost trying to find an imaginary ice cream shop, we enjoyed the vibrant nightlife of Vienna.
